Below are steps for Microsoft Windows users that can help speed up the computer or at least determine why the computer is running slow :

1. Background program

One of the most common reasons for a slow computer is a program that runs in the background. Remove or disable TSR and startup programs that automatically start each time the computer boots. To see what programs are running in the background and how much memory and CPU you are using, open Task Manager. If you are running Windows 7 or higher, run Resmon to get a better understanding of how your computer's resources are used. If you have an antivirus scanner on your computer, spyware protection program, or other security utility, make sure your computer scan is not in the background. If the scan is in progress, it will reduce the overall performance of your computer. If this is the case, let the scan finish, and the computer's performance will improve.

2. Delete temp file

When the computer runs the program, temporary files are stored on the hard drive. Deleting this temp file can help improve computer performance. First, we recommend using the Windows Disk Cleanup utility to delete temporary files and other files that are no longer needed on the computer. Unfortunately, Disk Cleanup might not delete every file in the temp directory. Therefore, we also recommend to delete temporary files manually. To do this, open the Start menu and type% temp% in the Search field. In Windows XP and earlier, click the Run option on the Start menu and enter% temp% in the Run field. Press Enter and the Temp folder will open. You can delete all files found in this folder and, if there are files that are used and cannot be deleted, they can be skipped.

3. Hard drive space

Make sure there is at least 200-500MB of hard drive space. This available space allows the computer to have room for swap files to grow, as well as space for temporary files. Run ScanDisk, chkdsk, or something equivalent to verify that there is nothing physically wrong with the computer's hard drive. Run Defrag to help ensure that the data is arranged in the best possible order. Use other software tools to test the hard drive for any errors by looking at the SMART of the drive.

4. Scan for viruses

If your computer is infected with one or more viruses, your computer can run slower. If your computer does not have an antivirus program installed, you can run the Trendecall Online Trend Micro online utility to scan for viruses on your computer, as well as delete them. You are also advised to install an antivirus program for active protection against viruses.

5. Scan for malware

Today, spyware and other malware are a big cause of many computer problems, including slower performance. Even if an antivirus scanner is installed on the computer, we also recommend running a malware scan. Use the free version of Malwarebytes to scan your computer for malware.

6. Hardware conflict

Make sure Device Manager doesn't have conflicts. If there is, solve this problem because it could be the cause of your problem.

7. Update Windows

Make sure you have installed all the latest Windows updates.

8. Update your driver

Make sure you have the latest drivers for your computer hardware, especially the latest video drivers. Having an outdated driver can cause a variety of problems, including slow performance.

9. Restart the computer

After making the changes above, make sure to reboot your machine.

10. Run a registry cleaner

We usually do not recommend registry cleaners. However, if you have followed all the steps above and your computer is still slow, try running a registry cleaner on the computer.

11. Increased memory

Computer memory, aka RAM If you have owned a computer for more than two years, you might need more memory. Today, we recommend that the computer have a minimum of 4 GB of memory (RAM) for 32-bit systems and 8 GB for 64-bit systems. By having enough memory to run programs in memory, your computer doesn't need to exchange information stored in memory to a swap file. If the hard drive light is constantly on, this can be an indication that the computer is frequently exchanging information between your memory and hard drive.

12. SSD

One of the biggest obstacles of computers is hard disk the drive. Upgrading from a standard hard drive to a Solid State Drive (SSD) will drastically improve computer performance. Make sure your computer and processor are not too hot. Excessive heat can cause a decrease in computer performance because most operating systems automatically reduce processor speed to help compensate for heat-related problems.

13. Hardware Cleaning

Dust, dirt, and hair can also inhibit the proper flow of air inside your computer, which can cause the computer to overheat. Make sure your computer case is clean, and the fans are not blocked. Create a schedule for cleaning your computer.
